In the Temperate Deciduous Forest, there are many problems due to Human Environment Interaction. There are such things as Deforestation and Acid Rain. Deforestation is when a forest of trees is cut down and usually used for the Lumber Industry of humans. In this biome, there is a variety of trees, and many are used for things like furniture. The Temperate Deciduous Forests used to cover some 2 billion hectares (20,000,000 sq. km.) Of that, 1.1 billion hectares (11,000,000 sq. km) have been cut for lumber products. The joke is the there seems to be a race to see what will wipe out the trees first: pollution or the timber industry.
A Forest, affected by Deforestation
But, we are trying to fix our mistake of destroying us all these delicate trees. The government had passed laws about the amount of trees you may cut down, and they also have rules. They tell you that you must perform Reforestation after cutting trees. Reforestation is when you cut one tree, you must plant more seeds. Now if you cut one tree, in ten years or so, another tree will sprout. This may seem as not very much, but it is better than what we have been doing. If you do this action, your business/company will also receive a tax cut, to interest you in reforestation.
Problem Two
Acid Rain is also causing problems in the Temperate Deciduous Forest. Drop in tree population have been recorded due to acid rain. Not only does acid rain affect the trees, it affects the wildlife too. George Hendry, an acid rain researcher said, "It's hard to argue with a dead fish," over the fact that acid rain affects fish habitats. When you look at a graph showing the destruction that acid rain causes, it's off the charts! "Despite major research efforts by a large group of concerned individuals and agencies, the evidence of widespread damage from acid rain remains less than convincing," said Alan W. Katzenstein. As the Carbon Dioxide is released from every car, factory, or even every tree cut down, more acid rain causes destruction.
Trees affected by Acid Rain
But there are good things, for people are trying to fix this huge problem. The best solution for Industrial Power Plants is to attach devices known as scrubbers in the smoke chimneys of these plants. These scrubbers reduce the amount of sulfur produced in the smoke by 90 - 95%, which produces less acid rain. Being the biggest problem in formation of acid rain, Industrial Power Plants have been told that they must clean there emission equipment, chimneys, and pipes regularly. Vehicles and cars are being fitted with catalytic converters into their exhaust pipes of vehicles, which also reduces the amount of sulfur dioxide released from the vehicles exhaust pipes. People are also considering less use of vehicles, which I think is not the best way but anything to help our environment, should be considered.
Humans effect on the Enviornment The Temperate Deciduous Forest is hugely effected by humans. When we burn fuels air pollutants destroy forests, killing wildlife and poisoning the soil. Clearing land for farming and clear cut logging are also destroying millions of trees in forests. Only in remote mountainous areas, where farming and logging were impractical, are forests untouched. Another thing destroying forests is mining. To mine you strip off the forest to get to the rock underneath. The acres of land used in mining are sometimes too damaged to the extent that forests do not re-grow on the damaged and depleted soil.
On a good note humans are now aware of these problems and trying to help. Mines now are reclaiming the surface, returning its land to useful purpose. To reclaim a mine, minors use the soil they dug out, clean it, and put it back in the ground then replanting trees or letting succession do its job. On occasion reclaimed mine lands are often more attractive to wildlife and humans than before mining started. Another way we help the environment is alternative energy. A useful alternative energy source in Temperate Deciduous Forest is wind energy. We use wind poweris the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage, or sails to propel ships.
